Coffee was first discovered during the 9th century in Northern Africa more specifically in Ethiopia where it spread to the rest of the world via Egypt and Europe through the Muslim world. The history of coffee involves chance occurrences, political intrigue, and the pursuit of wealth and power.
There are many stories and legends surrounding the origins of our favorite beverage. One of the most popular is the tale of Kaldi the Goat Herder:
Long ago in the area of Africa now known as Ethiopia, a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats would often wander off into a nearby thicket of trees. He followed them one day, and saw them nibbling the bright red berries and frolicking around the trees. Curious, Kaldi tried a few of the berries himself, and soon felt as refreshed and energized as his goats!
Before roasting techniques were developed, coffee was prepared in much the same way tea is today: the beans were placed in a cup of boiling water and steeped to extract the flavor.
