The Word Coffee

The word itself is thought by some to come from Kaffa, a region in Ethiopia where certain types of coffee are grown. Although this seems like an easy and logical explanation, it is probably too easy.

It is more likely that the word comes from the Arabic word qawah, which originally referred to certain qualities in wine. But, that was before wine was banned by Mohammed around 622 AD. After Mohammed’s Prohibition, the term qawah was used to describe the stimulating effects of a kind o tea brewed from the leaves of the coffee plant. Around 1400, the word was used to describe a drink brewed from the cherry of the plant.
