Our Roastmaster

Joffrey's is the gourmet coffee that rescues you from hum drum coffee with rich, flavorful taste. Thanks of course to our Roastmaster Chris de Mezzo.

Selecting Only the Finest Beans

Our Roastmaster visits coffee plantations and family farms around the world each year searching for the finest crop offerings available. He hikes out to the fields and hillsides where the coffee trees are grown to assess the growing conditions, the health of the trees and the harvesting methods used.

When Chris is not traveling the coffee-growing regions of the world to select the finest crops to import, he's researching, roasting, blending and cupping to ensure you the best possible coffee experience with every cup of Joffrey's coffee.

Dedicated to Better Coffee

Chris began roasting coffee 22+ years ago and it has been his passion ever since. As Joffrey’s gourmet coffee expert, he personally approves each and every crop selected for import and supervises the entire roasting process. He and his dedicated team roast by hand, in small batches, for full control over the roasting process to ensure maximum flavor and aroma.

It's a Matter of Taste

The Roastmaster follows the cherries from the coffee trees through the cleaning, drying, and hulling process to evaluate the quality of the final green coffee beans. A true coffee expert, Chris selects only the best of the best to bring home where the Joffrey's team get to work.

First, the incoming beans are inspected to make sure no damage occurred during its voyage and no inferior coffee beans have taken their place. Once we've verified the quality is the same the Roastmaster found in the field, a sample of each shipment is roasted and cupped to ensure consistent flavor. Next the beans are carefully hand-roasted in small batches, each tended personally by our gourmet coffee expert or one of his assistants.

Seeking Perfection

Like all perfectionists, the Roastmaster is constantly trying to do better and still experiments to find the optimal roast for each coffee. Chris learns his art from the coffee itself, continually adjusting roasts and blends to make the most of each and every bean.

"Nobody knows everything," Chris says. "We all learn something new every day."

At Joffrey's we can't wait to find out what new coffee Chris has for us to taste next!
